Outjo lies in a cluster of low hills on a limestone formation. This woodland and savannah area with its fertile grasslands, is dotted with livestock ranches. The name Outjo can be translated as place on the rocks or little hills referring to the area's hilly topography. In the Herero language Outjo means place of the cone shaped hills.
